Women in Istanbul, Izmir protest Turkey’s withdrawal from Istanbul Convention

Last night, women took to the streets in Istanbul and Izmir to protest Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention. “We struggled to get the Istanbul Convention, we will struggle to make it implement,” said the protesters.

News Center- Last night, women took to the streets in Istanbul and Izmir to protest Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention upon the call of the Campaign Group demanding the implementation of the Istanbul Convention. In Istanbul, women gathered at Beşiktaş, Barbaros coastline. They carried posters reading, “We don’t give up on the Istanbul Convention”, “We are justice, we will not keep silent”, “Judge the murderers, not t women”

One of the protesters, Meltem Yalçın said that they will take to the streets until femicides are ended. “We don’t recognize the withdrawal decision! The words of a group of men, one-man (Erdoğan) are invalid for women! Our struggle will continue until the Istanbul Convention is properly implemented and male violence ends.”

The protest of women ended after shouting slogans.

ESENYALI

Women came together in Esenyalı borough of Istanbul’s Pendik district under the leadership of Esenyalı Women's Solidarity Association. Dozens of women joined the protest under police blockade. Women carried posters reading, “Equal citizenship against discrimination”, “We struggled to get the Istanbul Convention, we will struggle to make it implement”. The protesters said, “We do not obey this order that attacks our rights and ignores us”.

IZMIR

Çiğli Women's Platform made a press statement in front of Çiğli Municipal building to protest the Istanbul Convention withdrawal. The protesters shouted slogans such as “Istanbul Convention keeps alive”, “Women, Life, Freedom” and “We don’t give up on the Istanbul convention”. Deniz Uslu read the statement, “One-man cannot ignore the lives and rights of millions of women. As women, we won this convention by struggling. We will not allow you to take our rights. We don’t give up on the convention.”

BORNOVA

Bornova Women’s Platform members gathered at Bornova Square to make a press statement. Before the press statement, women read the names of victims of femicide. The women shouted, “Killed women are our rebellion”.
