Women demand end to violence across Turkey

Women took to the streets in many cities of Turkey on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Thousands of women took part in Istanbul’s Taksim. Expressing their “rising”, women shouted slogans against violence, harassment, rape, and ongoing economic crisis.

News Center- Women of Istanbul marched to protest the increasing violence against women and femicide. Thousands of women took part in the march to Istanbul’s Taksim Square. “We don’t leave streets at night”, “We don’t remain silent, scare and bow down”, “Women are stronger together” the protesters shouted.

“Our rising against male-state violence doesn’t end, it is growing. We struggle for our lives” read the banner held by the women. The women shouted the name of women, who were killed in Turkey, had to kill to not be killed and jailed female politicians, and of Saturday Mothers and said “They are here”.

Police attack on women

Women began to march from Istiklal Avenue to Taksim Square. Riot police blocked the route to Taksim Square. But thousands of women resisted the police and continued to march to Taksim Square. Riot police blocked the way of women again in front of the building of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullet at women.

Ankara

Women came together at Sakarya Square of Ankara. Police blocked the routes to Sakarya Square and didn’t allow people to watch the protest. “We are rising up for an equal and free society against unemployment, poverty, insecurity, reactionary, harassment, rape, abuse, femicides, and wars,” the protesters shouted.  

Izmir

Women of Izmir took to the streets of Izmir. They started to march in front of the building of Izmir Bar Association to Prof. Dr. Türkan Saylan Cultural Center in Alsancak. “Femicide is political”, “You will be never alone” shouted the women, who marched until the building of the Özgecan Aslan Women's Solidarity Center of Buca Municipality.

Protests in Kurdish cities

Thousands of women took to the streets of seven Kurdish cities to demand an end to violence against women. Women marched in Diyarbakır, Van, Urfa, Adıyaman, Şırnak, Mardin and Hakkari provinces.

Amed

The women’s march, planned to be held from Dünya Crossroad to Rojava Park in Diyarbakır’s Kayapınar district, was held until Medya Junction due to the police blockade. “Time is the time for women’s freedom,” the women shouted. Members of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), Dicle Amed Women’s Platform, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Saliha Aydeniz, Co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), HDP Diyarbakır MPs Remziye Tosun and Dersim Dağ, Beycan Taşkıran, Co-chair of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) and many women joined the march. “Jin Jiyan Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom),” the women shouted and demanded an end to violence against women, femicides, and economic crisis.
