Woman Killed in Sulaymaniyah by Former Suspect Who Had Threatened Revenge
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network has revealed details of the killing of “Awat” in the city of Sulaymaniyah, shedding light on a series of threats and harassment that preceded her fatal shooting.
News Center – Gender-based violence and the coercive stalking of women are among the most serious challenges facing contemporary societies. Legal loopholes or weak protection mechanisms after the release of perpetrators can become tools that grant killers a second opportunity to carry out their threats.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network announced today, Wednesday, 18 February, new information regarding the killing of a Kurdish woman from East Kurdistan in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region. She was shot dead on the 12th of this month.
In its statement, the network explained that the woman’s name was Khatara, known as “Awat,” originally from the city of Marivan in East Kurdistan. She was killed in Sulaymaniyah on 12 February inside an apartment in one of the city’s residential housing complexes.
The statement noted that Awat, a mother of one child, had been working in Sulaymaniyah in recent years. She had previously faced repeated problems and threats from a man against whom she filed a legal complaint. He was subsequently arrested and imprisoned for a period of time. However, despite this, he continued to threaten her and had vowed to take revenge after his release.
According to the statement, Sulaymaniyah police arrested the suspect following the crime and have launched an investigation into the incident.
