Winners of Deniz Fırat Short Story and Poetry Competition

The winners of the 6th Deniz Fırat Short Story and Poetry Competition received their awards on Thursday.

News Center- Journalist Deniz Fırat was killed in an attack of ISIS on Makhmour on August 8, 2014. The Deniz Fırat Short Story and Poetry Competition organized by Free Students’ Union (Kurdish: Yekitiya Xwendekarên Azad, YXA) in memory of Deniz Fırat, has been dedicated to Sara Hogir Riha, Bîşeng Birûsk and Seyid Evran this year.

The award ceremony of the 6th Deniz Fırat Short Story and Poetry Competition was held at the conference hall in the Makhmour Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) on Thursday with the participation of the family members of Deniz Fırat, jury members and hundreds of people.

“The Deniz Fırat Photography, Story and Poetry Competition has been organized once every two years since 2015 by the Free Students’ Union (YXA) to keep Deniz Fırat’s memory alive,” Medeni İlham said in the opening speech of the ceremony. “Such competitions are important to keep the memories of our martyrs alive. Deniz Fırat sacrificed her life to make the voices of the Kurdish people heard all around the world.”

After the opening speech, the winners of the 6th Deniz Fırat Short Story and Poetry Competition received their awards. The awards are given out in three categories: Photography, poetry and story.

The names of the winners are as follows:

Kurdish Story

1.  “Xezalê” by Ahmet Çelik from Mardin’s Qoser (Kızıltepe) district.

2. “Kevir” by Bedri Adanır from Amed (Diyarbakır).

3. “Karwanê Meytan” by Leyla Saraç from Şırnak’s Hezex (İdil) district.

Turkish Story

1.  “Zilan’ın Rüyası” by Murat Bakur, reporter of Medya News TV.

2.  “Zirve’de Bir Kartal Öyküsü” by Eylem Kahraman, who was born Dersim but lives in Düsseldorf, Germany.

3.  “İsmail’in Vedası” by Salih Erol from Batman’s Sason district.

Kurdish Poetry

1.  “Ez Kîme” by Ahmet Çelik from Mardin’s Qoser (Kızıltepe) district.

2.  “Helbest” by Leyla Saraç from Şırnak’s Hezex (İdil) district.

3. “Ey Dîrok” by Rojin Bayram from Makhmour.

Sorani Poetry

1. “Xemî Em Evîneyî Eo Qone” by Hawta Cabar, who was born in Sulaymaniyah but lives in Dohuk.

2. “Yadgarî Warê Me” by Hawta Cabar, who was born in Sulaymaniyah but lives in Dohuk.

3.  “Helbestêk Bo Emranî Rêgayî Azadî” by Siware Şaho from Shengal (Sinjar).

Turkish Poetry
