Kobanê – The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes centered in Maraş on February 6, 2023, have affected many cities in Kurdistan, Turkey and Syria. The earthquakes have killed and injured tens of thousands of people. The earthquake survivors have been struggling to survive due to the lack of housing, food and basic needs. Sozdar Şêxo, co-chair of the Euphrates Region Internal Affairs Committee, says the Turkish state continues to carry out its attacks and target civilians in North and East Syria despite the devastating earthquakes.

‘The Turkish state continues its war policies’

In the interview with NuJINHA, Sozdar Şêxo pointed out that all countries have mobilized to help the earthquake survivors, “However, the Turkish state continues its war policies. Since the beginning of February, the Turkish state has been attacking all parts of North and East Syria. The Turkish state attacks the region because it sees the Democratic Nation project as a threat. The Turkish state aims to destroy this project that unites the people of the region.”

‘Our people will resist the attacks’

Commenting on the possible Turkish military operation into North and East Syria in February, Sozdar Şêxo said, “The Kurdish people are ready for a possible military operation in February. The conspiracy powers aim to continue the conspiracy against all Kurdish people in the person of leader Öcalan. For this reason, we are always ready for all attacks against us and our people will resist the attacks.”

 ‘Where are human rights organizations?”

Noting that the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) sent aid supplies to the earthquake survivors in the areas occupied by the Turkish state and Turkey-backed factions, Sozdar Şêxo said, “While all countries mobilize for the earthquake survivors, the Turkish state and Turkey-backed factions block the aid convoys sent by the AANES and target the Autonomous Administration and civilians by using drones. There are many organizations claiming that they are human rights organizations. I want to ask, ‘Where are they now?’ We call on our people to be alert against the attacks of drones and to defend themselves.”
