Beirut- The Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE) aims at improving the Lebanese electoral system and reinforcing the fair and democratic practice of parliamentary and municipal elections in Lebanon. In an interview with NuJINHA, Dayana EL Baba, senior program coordinator of the LADE, commented on the postponement of municipal elections in Lebanon.

“The postponement of the municipal elections for more than two years is illegal and has many negative consequences,” said Dayana El Baba. “Women are among the groups that are affected by the postponement of the municipal elections.  Supporting women to run for municipal elections is very important to promote women’s political participation and break stereotypes. Today, we want to see women as mayors and city council members. Women are capable of making decisions and they must activate their capacities.”

‘The presence of women in decision-making positions is essential’

Highlighting the economic crisis suffered by the municipalities in Lebanon, she said, “However, the main problem is the lack of long-term development plans to fix the situation. Today we see some initiatives in some municipalities; however, these initiatives are insufficient to achieve sustainable development, and the presence of women in decision-making positions is essential. The presence of women in municipalities is very important because women can highlight women’s issues and ensure equality. More women should run for municipal and parliamentary elections.”

‘Political parties have no quota for women and young people’

Speaking about the participation of young people in municipal elections, she said, “Unfortunately, no parties support the participation of young people and women in municipal elections. In addition, they have no quota for women and young people, which makes it difficult for them to reach decision-making positions. The presence of young people in decision-making positions is also essential to develop municipalities. Many municipalities have become inactive, lacking new ideas. But this does not prevent young people from fighting to build a new system.”

Dayana El Baba also talked about the role of the LADE in municipal elections. “The aim of the LADE is to improve the Lebanese electoral laws in compliance with international standards, to increase voter awareness and commitment to their electoral rights and duties and to monitor elections and ensure its fair application based on the Lebanese regulations and laws. We have education programs and campaigns to support women’s political participation. We will provide education programs for women, who will run for municipal elections to be held in 2024.”

Calling on Lebanon’s parliament not to postpone municipal elections anymore, Dayana El Baba said, “The postponement of the municipal elections for more than two years is illegal and has many negative consequences on society, especially on women. The Lebanese authorities must hold municipal elections without any delay.”
