“We cannot do anything” tell police to mother battered by specialized sergeant
A specialized sergeant named Ferhat K. threatened a woman named R.Ö. with death for reacting to him when he ran after her child; he then battered her in the Karlıova district of Bingöl. A court issued a protective order against him but police told the woman, “We cannot do anything. You cannot prevent him from coming to your home.” R.Ö. called on women for solidarity and the HDP Women’s Council issued a statement regarding the incident.
News Center- A specialized sergeant named Ferhat K. reportedly ran after the children living in the same building with him and playing in the basement in the Karlıova district of Bingöl province. One of the children told his/her mother named R.Ö. how the specialized sergeant ran after them.
Jinnews reports that the specialized sergeant threatened the woman with death and then battered her. R.Ö. was taken to a hospital and she filed a criminal complaint against the specialized sergeant after received a report from the hospital to prove that the specialized sergeant had attacked her. The court issued a protective order against him.
“This is not the first incident. He constantly harassed, insulted, and provoked women living in the building. Whenever we reacted to him, we were told, ‘You can file a complaint against me’. I filed a complaint against him but the police told me, ‘We cannot do anything. You cannot prevent him from coming to your home.’ We have been threatened with death. We have no security.”
She called for support
R.Ö. called on women for solidarity with her, “I know that he will go unpunished like other specialized sergeants. They trust the state and their weapons. He is obviously protected. This is not the first and will not be the last. I know I am not alone. I have women's solidarity. I call on women for being in solidarity with me. I don’t want the perpetrator to go unpunished.”
HDP met with R.Ö.
Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Women’s Council Spokesperson Ayşe Acar Başaran posted the story of R.Ö. on her social media account and said;
“As HDP Women’s Council, we will follow this case. We will do our best to have a fair case result. We know that the crimes committed by law enforcement officers, especially in Kurdish provinces, are not individual. Everyone, particularly the government and authorities, is personally responsible for every violence case against women.”
