Sulaymaniyah – The number of the suicide of women and femicides is increasing day by day in Southern Kurdistan. The government’s policies have a huge impact on femicide and suicide cases.

We spoke to researcher Kurde Bapir, a social counselor in Halabja, about these issues. She said, “The social status is in bad condition. We can say that we expect an increase in the number of femicides and suicides until the social life being affected by crises improves.” Highlighting that we shouldn’t forget that, “We are human beings”, Kurde Bapir said, “Human beings are creatures that make mistakes, but how far? This question should be answered. Murders and suicides have always been in the history of all societies. However, the murders in recent months go beyond normal. The number of murders is increasing day by day and it becomes a daily and routine situation. Every day, a person is killed.”

We should raise awareness of families

“Suicides, femicides, and accidents take more lives than the coronavirus. Why don't the authorities see this?” asked Kurde Bapir.

“Education starts at home. We understand that families should be educated in order to decrease the rate of femicide and suicides. Otherwise, society will collapse. Actually, the society is about to collapse now.”

“A well-educated society can be built”

The role of the media in shaping society is unquestionable, Kurde Bapir said, “Murderers are knowingly or unknowingly reported as heroes. Today, the media can play a great role in reducing violence. Media outlets can inform the public with their reports and news on this subject and this will significantly reduce the rate of violence. Failing to do this will negatively affect society. We have found that the rate of violence increases more when more people use social media platforms.  We can build a well-educated society and raise a new generation to stop femicide and violence against women.”
