Iranian student activist Armita Pavir sentenced to nearly 2 years in prison
An Iranian court has sentenced Armita Pavir, a student activist and one of the detainees of the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Women, Life, Freedom) movement, to 22 months and 17 days in prison.
News Center- The Revolutionary Court in Tabriz has sentenced Armita Pavir, a student activist and one of the detainees of the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Women, Life, Freedom) movement, to 22 months and 17 days in prison. She has been sentenced to seven months and 16 days in prison on charges of “insulting” the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and 15 months and one day on charges of “propaganda against the regime”.
Armita Pavir was expelled from Tabriz’s Azerbaijan Civil University for her student activism. On October 31, 2022, Armita Pavir was taken into custody in front of Madani University of Tabriz and then temporarily released on bail of 250 million Iranian Toman on December 8, 2022. On June 28, 2023, she was held in detention for a couple of hours and then released after interrogation. On September 21, 2023, she was arrested again and transferred to the Tabriz prison.
She went on a hunger strike on October 17, 2023 to protest the conditions in prison. She ended her hunger strike after the prison authorities promised to deal with her legal status and conditions of detention. On November 3, 2023, she went on a hunger strike again because her demands were not met. After more than 15 days of hunger strike, she was transferred from Tabriz prison to Imam Reza Hospital in Tabriz due to her deteriorating health condition. Then, she was transferred back to the prison without proper medical care.
