Verisheh Moradi granted ‘Honorary citizenship’ of Italy’s town Poggibonsi

The municipal council of the Italian town of Poggibonsi has granted “Honorary Citizenship” to Verisheh (Warisha) Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner and women's rights advocate at imminent risk of execution in Iran.

News Center- The municipal council of Italian town of Poggibonsi has granted “Honorary Citizenship” to Verisheh (Warisha) Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner and women's rights advocate at imminent risk of execution in Iran, for “defending human rights and women’s freedom by risking her life”.

“Now, I write it with emotion, with a unanimous votes, the Municipal Council of Poggibonsi has approved the recognition of Honorary Citizenship to Verisheh Moradi, writer, trainer, activist for the rights of women, girls and street children in both Syrian and Iran,” Susanna Cenni, Mayor of Poggibonsi, said Monday in a post on social media platform X.

“Verisheh Moradi was arrested in August 2023, tortured, imprisoned in Evin Prison, at risk of execution. Thanks to all the councilors of Majority and Minority for sharing. Thanks to the associations that have asked for and supported many Tuscany Mayors for this act. We will be active to communicate with Verisheh about our act and to follow her situation.”

Verisheh (Warisha) Moradi is a Kurdish political prisoner and women's rights activist sentenced to death by Iran. She was arrested by agents from Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence on August 1, 2023 and then transferred to Evin prison in Tehran after 13-day detention.

On April 9, 2024, she was indicted for charges including “membership in opposition groups” and “armed rebellion against the state” (baghi). In November 2024, she was sentenced to death for “armed rebellion against the state” (baghi).

Poggibonsi is a town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, central Italy.
