UN Women: Two mothers killed each hour in Gaza conflict

Women and children account for roughly 70 percent of people killed in the war in Gaza, with two mothers killed every hour since hostilities erupted more than 100 days ago, according to a UN Women report published on Friday.

News Center- At least 25,295 Palestinians have been killed and at least 63,000 have been injured in Gaza since October 7, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

‘Two mothers are killed each hour in Gaza’

On January 19, 2024, UN Women published a report examining the gendered impact of the conflict in Gaza. “Women and children account for roughly 70 percent of people killed in the war in Gaza, with two mothers killed every hour since hostilities erupted more than 100 days ago,” said the report. “More than 25,000 people reportedly killed - including 2 mothers every hour. Hospitals overcrowded, besieged and under fire. Homes reduced to rubble. Places of safety turned into places of danger. There is no let-up in the atrocities inflicted on Gaza since 7 October,” read the social media post of Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC).

Palestinian teenager shot dead in Jenin

Palestinian news agency WAFA reported on Monday that a Palestinian teenager was killed during confrontations with Israeli occupation forces in the town of Araba, south of Jenin. The 17-year-old teen is identified as Yamen Mohammed Husseti. At least 370 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 7, 2023, according to Palestinian figures.

The news agency also reported on Tuesday that a Palestinian man was shot and injured by Israeli forces following a military raid on the town of Beit Furik, located to the east of Nablus. The man was later transferred to a nearby hospital. Israeli forces also raided the village of Beit Amrin, west of Nablus, detaining a father along with his son after breaking into his house and tampering with its contents, reported WAFA.

Internet services down again in Gaza

The Palestine Telecommunications Company (PalTel) announced on Monday that all telecommunications services had been cut off in the Gaza Strip for the tenth time since October 7.

“We regret to announce that telecom services in the Gaza Strip have been lost. Gaza is blacked out again for the 10th time since October 7th due to the ongoing and escalating aggression,” the PalTel said in a statement.
