Turkey: 18 women killed in May

At least 18 women were killed in May 2021; the deaths of at least 25 women were reported in the press as suspicious in May, men inflicted violence on at least 67 women, according to Bianet compiling from local and national newspapers, news websites, and news agencies.

 
News Center- Bianet shared its May male violence monitoring report prepared according to the news compiled by it from local and national newspapers, news websites, and news agencies. Men killed at least 18 women raped nine women and inflicted violence on at least 67 women in May, 2021.
At least 25 women (in the provinces of Adana, Antalya 5, Ankara, Aydın, Batman, Çanakkale, Diyarbakır, Erzurum, Hatice, İstanbul 2, Kocaeli, Malatya Mardin 2, Mersin, Muğla, Şırnak, Urfa, Van, Zonguldak) were reported in the press as suspicious in May.
Men threatened women with “death” or “violence” in at least six provinces (Afyon, Bursa, İstanbul 3, Kocaeli). Four women who were killed by men had protection orders or injunctions.
The “excuses” of men for killing 14 women were not reported in the press. Men killed two women because they were “jealous” and they killed two women because “they wanted to have a divorce/ break up.” 12 women were killed by their husbands, boyfriends, or ex-husbands in May.
16 children were sexually abused
Men sexually abused 16 children in May. Seven children did not know the men who abused them. One child was abused by a grocery store owner, one by the boyfriend of his/her mother, one by his/her relative. Four children were abused by their fathers and two children were abused by their teacher. One of the cases of abuse was revealed after the child was impregnated.
