Qamishlo- The Syrian Women’s Council works to share the experiences of women who led the revolution in Rojava and strengthen women’s solidarity across Syria. “Syrian women must unite and be in solidarity with each other to play their role in the new Syria,” said Waad Al-Wajri, member of the Diplomacy Committee of the Syrian Women’s Council.

 ‘People have suffered a lot’

“Since the beginning of the 13-year Syrian crisis, people, especially women, have suffered a lot. Despite everything, Syrian women led the revolution thanks to their struggle against marginalization,” Waad Al-Wairi added. “Today, the women of North and East Syria have achieved many gains and their struggle has become a role model for women struggling for freedom and justice.”

‘Women must not give up their rights’

Women must keep making great efforts to protect their gains, Waad Al-Wajri emphasized. “Syrian women must intensify their efforts to participate in decision-making positions. In order to move towards freedom, all women, from Syria to Afghanistan, must not give up their rights. Currently, there are efforts to confine women to their homes and policies aiming to prevent women’s participation in all facets of life. Women should be aware of these policies and act together against them.”

‘Capitalist countries target women’

Waad Al-Wajri also spoke about the drafting of the new Syrian constitution and said, “Women’s participation in drafting the new Syrian constitution is very important to ensure women’s participation in all facets of life, including politics and social life. However, capitalist countries target women to silence them. They aim to control society and eliminate the gains achieved by women in the revolution by targeting women. We call on all Syrian women to unite and be in solidarity with each other to achieve women’s rights.”

‘We aim to empower women’

At the end of her speech, Waad Al-Wajri vowed to follow in the footsteps of the revolutionary women, who lost their lives while fighting for freedom. “In North and East Syria, women fight for freedom and many women were martyred while fighting for freedom. We want to introduce the gains achieved by women in the Rojava Revolution to Syrian women and aim to empower women in all facets of life.”
