Square in France named after killed Kurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf

Lyon Municipality in France names a square after Kurdish politician Hevrin Khalaf, who was killed by Turkey-backed armed group near Girê Spî on October 12, 2019.

News Center- The Lyon city council had a meeting on July 8 and approved the square, located in the Guillotiere district of Lyon, to be named after Hevrin Khalaf. The inauguration of the square took place on 21 September. Fanny Dubot, mayor of the seventh borough of Lyon, made a speech at the inauguration ceremony and said they have named 20 streets, avenues and squares after women. She emphasized that Hevrin Khalaf was a Kurdish and feminist woman, and said, “Her struggle for common life is an important symbol for us.”

The Lyon city council member Sonia Zdorovtzoff also made a speech at the inauguration ceremony. Emphasizing the struggle of Kurds and women in NE Syria, Sonia Zdorovtzoff read the letter sent by Hevrin Khalaf’s mother.

In addition, an exhibition on the political life and struggle of Hevrin Khalaf was opened at the Lyon city hall. The exhibition will be open until November.

Who is Hevrin Khalaf?

Born on November 15, 1984, Hevrin Khalaf was brutally murdered by Turkey-backed groups near Girê Spî on October 12, 2019. Hevrin Khalaf was a board member of the Syrian Democratic Council and the Secretary General of the Future Syria Party.
