Tunisia- Jannat Kedashi, the president of the Association of Voix d'Ève, stated that their association has participated in the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence. Stating that the phenomenon of femicide is a serious phenomenon that should be emphasized, she said the ongoing “silence of the state” towards the crimes committed against women that deprive them of their right to life and to live safe is a “shameful matter”. Recalling that violence against women has increased sevenfold in the last two years, Jannat Kedashi said, “It is necessary to stop violence against women and understand their real causes away from the media propaganda carried out by the authority. “The number of murdered women is more than reported by the press outlets,” she said.

“We will not remain silent”

Recalling the kidnapping and raping of an 18-year-old girl named Haifa Mahfuzi in Kairouan governorate by a man, who serves as a National Guard agent in Kasserine, Jannat Kedashi said, “The sad thing in this incident is that the rapist is a security officer, who has to protect women. Haifa Mafuzi was tortured. We will not remain silent anymore. The silence of the state kills women in Tunisia.”

Tunisian women are expected to organize a march tomorrow to protest gender-based violence.
