Hundreds of detainees&female inmates in prisons in the Darfur region under the control of the Rapid Support Forces face harsh humanitarian conditions, amid acute deterioration in health, food conditions, and unprecedented overcrowding in the women’s prison
SUDAN_ Human rights concerns have escalated regarding the safety of hundreds of detainees in prisons under the control of the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan, amid increasing accusations of committing widespread violations against women and men, in the absence of judicial oversight, in addition to the acute deterioration of basic humanitarian needs.
Sources told our agency about the worsening suffering of female inmates inside the women's prison in Al-Daein city in East Darfur State, amid unprecedented overcrowding and acute deterioration in health and food conditions.
It noted that the women's prison in Al-Daein holds about 164 female inmates living in complex humanitarian conditions, noting that their numbers are continuously increasing since the outbreak of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, without being brought to trial.
It explained that the prison administration has been deporting male detainees to prisons in Nyala city, especially those arrested on charges of "collaboration with the Sudanese army" or communicating with entities the Rapid Support Forces consider hostile to it, or with "armed groups allied with the Sudanese army," while the deportation operations do not include women.
Hundreds of detainees of both sexes and detainees in areas under the control of the Rapid Support Forces in the Darfur region are languishing in harsh conditions, where they are held for long periods without clear charges being filed or being referred to the judiciary.
Prisons in East and South Darfur states have been suffering from increasing overcrowding since the beginning of the conflict, simultaneously with the expansion of arrest campaigns carried out by the Rapid Support Forces' intelligence, which have targeted civilians, traders, and public employees under the pretext of communicating with the Sudanese army or violating its economic directives, amid a complete absence of judicial and human rights oversight.
