Seminar in Algeria: Feminists talk about Algerian women's resistance

Feminists held a seminar in Algeria to mark the 61st anniversary of the December 11, 1960 demonstrations in Algeria. “Women were everywhere. They fought the enemy by themselves. The issue of freedom and equality was their cause for a long time,” said one of the participants.

Algeria- Algerian Association for Women in Communication held a seminar on Saturday (December 11) with the motto, “Women and Revolution” in cooperation with the National Office of Culture and Information to mark the 61st anniversary of December 11, 1960 demonstrations in Algeria. “Algerian women deserve to know how women resisted in the revolution of Algeria,” said Nafissa Lahreche, the founder and president of the Algerian Association for Women in Communication.

“Young women left their houses to fight”

At the seminar, researcher, and professor of sociology Fatima Ben Seddik made a speech about the impact of December 11 on the history of the feminist movement. In her speech, she said, “Jamila Briki was one of the organizers of the protests on December 11. Women were more involved in defending and liberating the country than men. Many women such as Salima Bouaziz, Mamia Chentouf, and Saliha Wasthithi left their houses to fight at the age of 18 or 19.”

“We should learn our history from the resistance of women”

Author and Researcher Nujoud Qalouji also attended the seminar with an article about women filters. Stating that she learned the history from the resistance of women, Nujoud Qalouji said, “I realized that I didn’t know anything about history when I started doing research on women’s history. We should learn our history from the resistance of women.”
