Saudi Arabia releases Samar Badawi, Nassima al-Sadah from prison

Saudi Arabia has released two women’s activists after they served their time in prison.

News Center - Saudi authorities released two women’s activists on Sunday, June 27, after they served their time in prison. The release of human rights activists Nassima al-Sadah and Samar Badawi was announced by Human Rights Watch.

Nassima al-Sadah and Samar Badawi were detained in July 2018 along with 12 women on suspicion of harming Saudi interests.  

Human Rights Watch welcomed the release of the two women and said, “These brave women should have never been detained in the first place. They should have been appreciated for leading change in Saudi Arabia.”

Nassima al-Sadah (47) is a human rights writer and activist. Samar Badawi (40) is a Saudi Arabian human rights activist, who has been arrested many times for participating in women driving campaign. In 2012, she was given an award by the United States Department of State for her contributions to women's rights.
