Ankara- Gender-based discrimination surrounds women's lives as violence and poverty in both public and private spheres. Women cannot take their share they deserve due to the unequal social status of women and men. In particular, domestic production and maintenance efforts are not considered as an economic value.
Failure to achieve gender equality is one of the most important factors determining the development processes of societies. Limiting effects of gender-based freedoms prevent social development. The expression of women's empowerment is beginning to take its place in the development programs of governments and empowerment in rural development emerges as an important component. Women face gender stereotypes.
In the thesis entitled “Empowerment Dynamics Created by Women's Organizations in the Rural Area and the Position of Men” prepared by Filiz Kasap at Bolu Abart İzzet Baysal University and by analyzing Kilis Ravandalı Women’s Association, the experiences of women who became members of the association to establish social relations rather than economic income is discussed. According to the thesis, women face both men’s gender-based prejudices and the negative comments of the villagers when women try to found an association due to traditional gender roles of rural communities. However, changing prejudices leaves the field clear for women’s participation. Prejudiced women also decide to join the organization.
Organizing brings an active position with it
Women living in rural areas become active in shaping their lives through organizations by collaborating. The opportunity is created to act for common interests and influence certain organizations by raising awareness of their own needs through cooperation.
Economic empowerment and a sense of independence
The thesis says that a sense of independence becomes evident as they receive a recompense for their works. It also states that women have the potential to change the balance of power by earning income and gaining economic power.
Social and recreational activities make women feel precious
Due to their responsibility at home and “men's permission”, women are not allowed to go out of the village alone. The participation of women in social and cultural activities is possible when an association organizes an activity. Social and recreational activities as activities of the association make women feel precious. The use of the internet by women to access information also shows both social and organizational empowerment. The trainings women receive while organizing contribute to their lives.
