Rosa Salih becomes first refugee elected to Glasgow City Council

Rosa Salih, a Kurdish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has been elected to Glasgow City Council.

News Center- 33-year-old Rosa Salih, a Kurdish politician and activist, has been elected to Glasgow City Council for the SNP to represent the Greater Pollok ward. She becomes the first refugee to be elected to Galsgow City Council.

Rosa Salih arrived in Scotland as a young girl two decades ago when her family was forced to flee Iraq. She has campaigned for the rights of refugees since she was a teenager and with school friends formed the activism group the Glasgow Girls.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon shared her congratulations following the win: "Shedding a (very happy) tear at this result. From asylum seeker to SNP councillor."

“As a kid I came to #Glasgow as a refugee. Now elected to its city council to represent this wonderful city that I love so dearly. If you told me 20 years ago I would be a councillor I would not have believed you. Thank you.

I’m proud of my background #RefugeesWelcome # SNP,” Rosa Salih posted on her social media account.
