Hasakah - All peoples living in North and East Syria support their defense units to protect their region against the non-stop Turkish attacks. The members of the HPC-JIN, the autonomous women's wing of the civilian self-defense forces of North and East Syria, have mobilized in the Zirgan (Abu Rasin) town of Hasakah against all attack threats. HPC-JIN executive Meryem Qasim spoke to NuJINHA about the current situation in the town.

“The spreading news are false news”

Emphasizing that the people living in Zirgan resist despite the ongoing attacks on the town, Meryem Qasim said, “The town of Zirgan has been shelled many times. The houses of civilians have been damaged in the attacks. Many civilians, including women and children, have been killed and injured in the attacks. Despite all these brutal attacks, the people do not leave their town and resist. The reports saying Zirgan was evacuated do not reflect the reality in the town. The bombardments on the town last one hour and then people return to their daily lives. The organizations and institutions keep serving the people. The aim of spreading false news is to create chaos and fear among people.”

She took over her son’s struggle

Meryem Qasim’s son Baran was killed while fighting ISIS. Stating that she follows her son’s path, Meryem Qasim said, “I will not allow our region to be occupied. My son was martyred in the attacks on Serêkaniyê in October 2019. He sacrificed himself for his lands and people. As a martyr's mother, I defend Zirgan and its people. It is never too late to fight for your homeland. Despite our ages, we still stand with our fighters. Our fighters resist on the battlefields while we resist in the town.”

Calling on all peoples to speak out against the ongoing attacks, Meryem Qasim said, “Today is our day. People of all ages should rise up and say ‘no to occupation’. We will follow the path of our martyrs and resist the last drop of blood. Women should unite and protect their revolution.”
