The Tunisian Association of the Democratic Women (ATFD) has released a report on femicide cases in the country. According to the report, women had reported violence against them before they were killed.

Tunisia- Despite the Tunisian Law 58, the number of violence against women and femicide cases have been increasing in Tunisia. The Tunisian Association of the Democratic Women (ATFD) has released a report on femicide in the country. 28,12 of killed women had filed a divorce and reported violence against them before they were killed; most women were killed at their homes, according to the report.

“71,73 of killed women were married and aged from 19 to 30,” the report said, “Most of the killed women were poor and 46% of them did not work. Most of the women were killed in their so-called 'safe' homes. This report was prepared by compiling news from 22 local, national newspapers and news websites between 2016 and 2022.”

‘The media does not raise awareness’

According the report, the media, journalists and press workers do not raise awareness about femicide and violence against women. “The patriarchal system is the main reason for the increase of femicide cases in Tunisia. Great efforts must be made to prevent femicide. The number of femicide cases continues to increase although women’s organizations speak out against femicide and try to raise awareness about this phenomenon,” the report said.
