Prison Sentences of Up to 77 Years Against Kurdish CItizens of Mahabad
At least 16 Kurdish citizens from Mehabad,including Nazanin Eliasi,have been sentenced to up to 77 years in prison in a joint case, on charges including "assembly and collusion," "belonging to opposition parties," and "propaganda against the regime."
News Center-Judicial measures have been tightened against a group of Mahabad residents, following a series of arrest after charges related to political activity and opposition,amid reports of long prison sentences and detention conditions that restrict communication with lawyers and families.
According to published reports, a 77-year prison sentence has been issued against at least 16 Kurdish citizens from Mahabad in a joint case,including Nazanin Eliasi,Known as Gulaleh.Reports indicate that these citizens,who were arrested by the Intelligence Department,were subjected to harsh sentence issued by the First Branch of the Mahabad Revolutionary Court.
In this case,Nazanin Eliasi was sentenced to two years in prison,while varying sentences were issued against the remaining detainees,ranging from five months to seven years and one month,in addition to five-year prison sentences for another group of detainees.
The charges against them include "assembly and cllusion,"belonging to opposition parties,"propaganda against the regime,"and "activity on social media platforms in favor of parties opposed to the Islamic Republic."
According to reports,they were arrested between November and December 2024,and transferred to the Intelligence Depatment dtention center in Urmia, where they were prevented from contacting a lawyer or communicating with their families throughout the interrogation period.
