Police attack women with rubber bullets, tear gas

Police attacked women demanding the removal of the tent set up in front of the HDP office in Izmir by police. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas against women.

News Center - Female members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) visited the tent set up to accept condolences for Deniz Poyraz, who was killed in the attack on the HDP office in Izmir. After the visit, the women hung out a sign reading, “Deniz Poyraz Street” on a wall located in the Hürriyet Boulevard in Izmir. The women staged a sit-in protest by closing Poet Eşref Boulevard to demand the removal of the tent set up in front of the HDP office by police. The women shouted slogans such as, “Prevent killers, not women” and “Down with fascism.” Police attacked the women with rubber bullets and tear gas.

HDP Izmir MP Serpil Kemalbay made a speech in front of the HDP office, “This tent was set up here by the Governor's Office, by the palace (referring to the Presidential Complex), by the AKP government. It was set up to motivate fascist attacks to make our party a target. Our comrade Deniz was alone in our provincial building and a trained and equipped killer supported by the AKP-MHP fascism in Syria attacked our building and shot a woman. This tent is the tent of the killer. We demand the removal of this tent,” she said in her speech.

HDP Women’s Council Spokesperson Ayşe Acar Başaran reacted to the police barriers and said, “Prevent killers, not women. You are responsible for the murder of Deniz. Remove this tent.”

After the speeches, the women wanted to march. Police prevented the women from marching and blockaded them. In response, the women staged a sit-in protest. Police attacked women by using rubber bullets and tear gas.
