‘I wish Mother Sakine had not died in disappointment’

After the funeral ceremony, Mürüvet Demir, one of the Peace Mothers, made a speech. “All Mother Sakine demanded was peace. She passed away with longing for peace. Our heart has been torn apart; do not allow other hearts to be torn apart.”

“She instilled hope for peace in our heart,” said Nezahat Teke, another member of the Peace Mothers. “Yes, we all die one day but I wish Mother Sakine had not died in disappointment. She always demanded peace, saying, ‘My heart has been torn apart; do not allow other hearts to be torn apart’. Her hand extended for peace was left hanging in the air. We kiss your hand hundreds of times. The graves of two peace mothers are next to each other. They left us orphans. But we will maintain their struggle for peace. I express my condolences to her family and the Kurdish people.”
