Gaza - Almost all of the women journalists in the Gaza Strip have been subjected to violence at least once. The escalation of violence due to the war causes Palestinian women journalists to face more challenges. Despite all the challenges, women journalists keep reporting on the ground in cooperation with civil defense organizations. On March 14, many women journalists came together at the event held by the Palestinian Civil Defense (PCD) to discuss and highlight their roles in humanitarian aid work.

Journalist Maryam Abu Daqqa was one of the women journalists, who participated in the event. She told us that she participated in the event to learn more about the role of the media during the crisis, state of emergency, and war. “I was one of the participants of the event on the role and work of the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip. As Palestinian journalists, we highlight the importance of humanitarian aid work of the Civil Defense through photos and coverages.”

“Women journalists in the Gaza Strip have a strong and brave role”

Emphasizing that humanitarian aid works don’t mean only joining the humanitarian aid works but also helping families, fulfilling their demands, helping the wounded, and transferring the martyrs, Maryam Abu Daqqa said, “In the last period, we had a great war in the Gaza Strip. We worked 24 hours to save women, children, and old people. We, as women journalists in the Gaza Strip, have a strong and brave role because we face many difficulties while reporting on the ground.”

“The role of women journalists in the media is very important”

Journalist Fatima al-Zahra Shbair emphasized that the role of women journalists in the media is very important. “Journalists need to be skilled and professional to monitor the contents of news. We recommend the civil defense to take the initiative to launch a media campaign throughout the year and monitor the content of news for the citizens.”
