March to Amara starts: We will demand peace and freedom

“We will demand peace and freedom in Amara,” said young women joining a four-day march to end in Amara on April 4, marking Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s birthday.

Amed (Diyarbakır)- On April 1,2025, the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Youth Council kicked off a four-day march from many cities to Amara neighborhood of the Helfetî (Halfeti) district of Riha (Urfa), on the occasion of the 76th birthday of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. The march will end in Amara on April 4.

On Tuesday, young people, women and mothers gathered at Sheikh Said Square in Amed and started the march despite the police's attempts to prevent them from marching. They will first march to Sewreg /Grê Sor (Siverek) and then to Curnê Reş (Hilvan). On April 3, a festival will be held in Curnê Reş. After the festival, they will march from Xalfeti to Amara.

‘Young people will play the most active role in the process’

“Our first demand is the lifting of the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan,” said Havin Varhan, member of the DEM Party Young Council. “We started this march to support the process initiated by Mr. Öcalan. Young people will play the most active role in the process. We call on all people to come to Amara on April 4 in order to demand peace and freedom.”

Dilan Can, another member of the Youth Council, thinks that young people are   pioneers of the peace process. “As young people, we know very well where we should stand. During the march, we will show once again how faithful and hopeful we are. For four days, we will demand peace and freedom. We know that the struggle of young people will bring democracy and peace.”

“As young people, we are very excited about this march,” said Fulya Taştan, another young woman participating in the march. “We demand peace and the lift of isolation. I call on all people to be in Amara on April 4.”
