Journalists and residents of Mahkmur camp commemorated today, Friday, August 8,the 12th anniversary of the martyrdom of journalist Deniz Firat,who lost her while covering the ISIS attacks on the Martyr R Rüstem Cudi camp in 2014. The event was held in remembrance of her role in conveying the facts of the attack that targeted the camp on August 8, 2014, as part of a series of widespread attacks launched by ISIS in early August of that year.

During the event, a statement was read by journalist Farqin Kara, which stated: "Press freedom is not limited to conveying news; it is an integral part of the struggle to protect the existence of society, human dignity, and truth. The history of free Kurdish journalism has been built on immense sacrifices, from Abi Musa, through Gurbetelli Ersöz and Kilistan Tara, Hero Bahadin, Nazım Daştan, Cihan Bilkin, Akid Roj, Murad Mirza, Nujin Erhan, to Deniz Firat." The statement noted that true journalists used their cameras as weapons of truth in the darkest circumstances and upheld the honor of journalism.

The statement highlighted Deniz Firat's journey and her early struggle for truth, affirming her belief that "the pen of truth never breaks," and pointed to her pivotal role in establishing and developing free journalism in Makhmur. "We will continue the path of Deniz Firat and all the journalists who lost their lives. The pens and cameras of the fighters for truth will never be neglected. We will continue to follow in their footsteps."
