Kurdish political prisoner Pakhshan Azizi sentenced to death

Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner, journalist and women’s rights activist, was sentenced to death by Branch 26 of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran on Tuesday.

Pakhshan Azizi was convicted of “rebellion” on the charge of “Membership in groups that waged an armed uprising against the Islamic government”. She was also sentenced to four years in prison on charges of “being a member of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK)”

On August 4, 2023, Pakhshan Azizi was arrested by Iranian Intelligence Forces in the Kharazi town of Tehran. In December 2023, she was transferred from Ward 209 of Evin Prison to the women's ward of the same prison. For more than four months, she was subjected to torture in detention and deprived of her fundamental rights, including her right to counsel. Since August 2023, she has been deprived of her right to a fair trial and banned from lawyer and family visits.

Pakhshan Azizi was previously arrested on November 16, 2009, during a protest by Kurdish students in Tehran against the executions of prisoners in Kurdistan. She was released on bail of 100 million Tomans on March 19, 2010, after four months in detention.
