NuJINHA spoke to Xezne Îbrahîm, Co-chair of the university, about the new building of the university.
‘Very sacred and meaningful’
Describing the move to the new building as “Very sacred and meaningful”, Xezne Îbrahîm said, “Kurdish people dreamed of receiving education in their own language for years. Since the revolution in Rojava Kurdistan, they have been able to receive education in their own language. Opening a university was, of course, not easy but we managed to open the Kobanê University after the opening of the Afrin and Rojava universities.”
‘We have many faculties’
Noting that the university was opened in 2017 despite all the difficult conditions, she said, “Everyone knows that Kobanê suffered a conflict period and most of the buildings in the city were destroyed in the conflict. So we faced many obstacles in finding a space for the university. That time, we had only two faculties of Kurdish literature and natural sciences and only 38 students. Today, we have many faculties and students.”
The university now has 1,200 students, mostly women, 186 university employees and 30 academics.
Pointing out that a language revolution is currently taking place in North and East Syria, Xezne Îbrahîm said, “Moving to the new building is very important for us. Now, students have more spaces to study. The new building consists of three sections, two for students and one for administration. It also has a library and a study hall. We will build laboratories for physics, chemistry and medical students. Our students and we are very happy to have a new building and we will develop more projects to be more successful.”
