Qamishlo – Women all around the world have organized activities and events to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Henifa Muhemed, an executive of the Qamishlo Women's Justice Council spoke to NuJINHA about the importance of the day. Noting that women constitute one-half of the world population, Henifa Muhemed said that November 25 was declared as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women as a result of women's struggle.

“We will discuss the effects of patriarchal mentality”

“We will hold a conference in Rojava to mark the day. We are still working to hold the conference. We will discuss social problems faced by women due to war, conflicts and patriarchal mentality, and the attacks of Turkey. Due to ongoing problems in the region, the Justice Council and Women’s House generally deal with the problems faced by women. As women, we have to fulfill our responsibilities. We should protect women,” Henifa Muhemed told us.

“Women should take part in decision-making positions”

“Women should raise their voices more to demand their rights,” Henifa Muhemed said that more women should take part in decision-making positions. “As women in Rojava Kurdistan, we have the opportunity to be administrators. Women may not have this opportunity in other parts of the world. Women of the Middle East can enter the parliaments but they are not in decision-making positions. Women should take part in decision-making positions to build a democratic society and ensure gender equality. That's why every day should be the day of women.”
