Ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza
The ceasefire and hostage release agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, brokered by the mediators from Qatar, and Egypt and the US, has been in force since January 19. The ceasefire is a serial initiative in three stages, beginning with a six-week ceasefire, the release of all Israelis being held hostage in Gaza in exchange for some of the Palestinian prisoners being held by Israel, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and a reconstruction process lasting from three to five years.
Hamas is expected to release a fifth batch of Israeli hostages on Saturday as part of the hostage release and ceasefire deal.
On Tuesday, Hamas officials said they began talks with international mediators over the second phase of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington on Monday to discuss the second phase of the ceasefire deal with Hamas with the Trump administration.
