Humanitarian Crisis in El Fasher Forces Thousands to Flee
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that more than 107,000 people have been displaced from El Fasher and surrounding villages in North Darfur, western Sudan, following the Rapid Support Forces’ takeover of the city.
News Center-The humanitarian crisis in El Fasher, North Darfur, has worsened as tens of thousands of residents fled following violations committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after taking control of the city, including mass killings and widespread arrests, while those remaining live under constant threat.
An estimated 107,294 people have been displaced from El Fasher and surrounding villages between October 26 and December 8, due to increasing insecurity after the RSF seized the city, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
On Sunday, December 21, the IOM reported that the vast majority of the displaced, approximately 72%, remain within North Darfur State, in its northern and western areas.
Estimates indicate that 19% of the displaced have reached other states in Sudan, including Central Darfur (west), Northern (north), and White Nile.
According to field teams from the Displacement Tracking Matrix, 75% of those displaced since October 26 were already internally displaced, including people who had previously fled major camps (Zamzam, Abu Shouk) or locations within El Fasher during earlier escalations, and were displaced again after October 26.
The organization noted that movement restrictions and insecurity may limit mobility, and displacement routes could change depending on evolving conditions and security developments.
The IOM emphasized that these figures are preliminary and subject to change due to ongoing insecurity and rapidly evolving displacement dynamics, noting that the situation remains extremely tense and volatile.
In addition to western Sudan, the three states of the Kordofan region (North, West, and South) have witnessed violent clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF in recent days, resulting in the displacement of tens of thousands more.
