‘History Proves That the Will of the People and Their Right to Life Are Stronger Than All Attempts at Genocide’
The Women’s Movement and Kongra Star condemned attacks on Kobani as a direct threat to life and dignity, urging the UN and international community to lift the siege immediately.
Kobani — The continued attacks on Kobani since early January have led to a suffocating siege that threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians, amid growing calls for urgent international intervention.
The General Coordination of Kongra Star in the Euphrates Region, along with the Women’s Movement, issued a statement on Wednesday, January 28, condemning the ongoing attacks on Kobani, describing them as a direct threat to the people’s right to life and dignity.
The statement read:
“Since January 6, 2026, the Syrian Interim Government and extremist groups have launched violent attacks on North and East Syria, destroying security and stability in the region, forcing residents into displacement, and besieging the city of Kobani. Today, for more than a week, over 400,000 people in Kobani have been living without water, electricity, medicine, fuel, or internet, while the city is being attacked from three directions. Massacres are being committed against civilians, particularly in the villages of Qasmi and Kharab Ashk, where many women and children have lost their lives.”
The statement noted that the targeting of women has been present since the beginning of the attacks through brutal practices ranging from mutilation of bodies to public executions. This, it said, recalls the resistance of Kurdish women fighters such as Arîn Mîrkan and her comrades in Kobani in 2014, who defeated ISIS. “Multiple forms of savage violence were practiced against them, from throwing bodies into buildings to mutilating their corpses, and carrying out public killings of women fighters and civilians.”
The statement added that despite the announcement of a ceasefire, attacks have continued, particularly coinciding with the anniversary of the liberation of Kobani from ISIS terrorism on January 26, as if there were an attempt to revive ISIS once again. However, it stressed that history proves the will of the people and their right to life are stronger than all attempts at genocide.
Members of Kongra Star affirmed their determination to continue resistance until peace is restored and issued an appeal to the international community, humanitarian organizations, and free women’s movements to stand with Kobani, stating:
“We, the members of Kongra Star and the women of the city of Kobani, condemn these brutal and immoral attacks against the existence of the Kurdish people and against women and children, and we will continue to resist until our people regain peace.”
The statement concluded by emphasizing that the world owes a debt to Kobani, which liberated humanity from ISIS, and that international aid and support have become an urgent necessity to halt the unfolding tragedy.
