Hatun Aslan’s relative: Arresting a 71-year-old mother is an atrocity

71-year-old Hatun Aslan and 79-year-old Meryem Soylu were detained four days ago in Diyarbakır, and then they were sent to prison. Hatun Aslan’s daughter-in-law Muhsine Aslan reacted to their arrest and said, “This is an unconscionable practice. What kind of justice this is... She has suffered from many diseases. How can she live in prison?” Lawyer Gülistan Ataş said that they are going to file an application for the release of the two women today.

Amed – On February 27, police conducted house raids and detained 14 people, including 71-year-old Hatun Aslan, administrator of the Solidarity with Families Who Lost Their Relatives in the Cradle of Civilizations Association (MEBYA-DER), and 79-year-old Meryem Soylu. The two women were sent to court for arrest. They were sent to prison for alleged “being members of a (terrorist) organization”. “They raided our house four days ago. They took the newspapers and detained my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law was held in detention for four days. We weren’t allowed to see her for four days,” said Hatun Aslan’s daughter-in-law Muhsine Aslan.
“What kind of justice this is”
Noting that she thought her mother-in-law would be released after her detention, Muhsine said, “The lawyers called us and said that she was jailed, we were shocked. How could two women aged between 71 and 79 be jailed? This is an unconscionable practice. What kind of justice this is… I am 40 years old now and I have seen everything in my life. They put my mother-in-law in prison by showing the newspapers they took from her house but she is an illiterate person. My mother-in-law has suffered from many diseases; she keeps receiving treatments for her diseases. How can she live in prison? If there were rights and laws in this country, mothers would not be held in prison.”
Lawyer Gülistan Ataş told us they are going to file an application for the release of the two women today.
