Shengal – On August 3, 2014, ISIS attacked Shengal and carried out a massacre there. Thousands of Yazidi women were taken captive by ISIS. Even though the influence of ISIS in Syria and Iraq is weakening, the fate of thousands of thousands Yazidi women is still unknown.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Asayish force in Rojava and Mala Êzidîyan (House of Yazidis) keep working to rescue Yazidi women and girls. On the anniversary of the liberation of Shengal, a Yazidi woman named Sipan Xelil was rescued from ISIS. Another Yazidi woman was recently rescued from ISIS in Deir ez-Zor by the SDF. 25-year-old Zêrê Meto Şivan was transferred to Shengal yesterday and she reunited her family with the support of the Yazidi Women's Movement.

“There is nothing to fear, return”

“I was taken captive during the edict. I saw many dirty things. I was held captive by ISIs for seven years. My family got in contact with me and Mala Êzidiyan and the Asayish force in Rojava rescued me from ISIS. I thank them to reunite me with my family,” Zêrê told NuJINHA. She also called on Yazidis, who are afraid to return to Shengal, “If they have an opportunity, they should return. There is nothing to fear. Our families are looking forward to reuniting with us. We must unite as a society to prevent our people from being killed and being taken captive by ISIS again. I thank SDF and all people helping us. “

“It is our rebirth day”

Zêrê’s sister Menisa Meto told us how she was happy to see her sister again. “I am married, and we managed to escape from ISIS. However, my three siblings were taken captive in Qine. My brother and his four children were held by ISIS for two years. And my sister is here now. We are very happy. Today is our rebirth day. We thank SDF, Mala Êzidiyan and the Asayish force in Rojava.”

“They risk their lives to rescue”

Yazidi Women's Movement member Feride Sado made a speech and she said, “Everyone should know that the captivity ends thanks to our martyrs. Rojava Security Forces members risk their lives to rescue Yazidis. Our people should believe in us; we will rescue all Yazidis taken captive by ISIS.”
