Ignoring the AKP government's responsibilities regarding violence against women and femicide, Erdoğan makes statement and condemns femicides while two photographs show inequality in Turkey.
SARYA DENİZ
İstanbul – Two years ago, Emine Bulut was stabbed to death by her ex-husband and the video featuring her last words, “I don’t want to die” was shared on social media. Her scream left an unhealed mark in everyone's hearts, particularly women’s hearts. The name of Emine Bulut has been unforgettable by women thinking, “When will I die”. After the death of Emine Bulut, many women said, “I don’t want to die” and asked for help. Some of them were heard while others became the victims of femicide.
11 women were killed after the “good” news
On March 2, 2021, Turkish President Erdoğan announced Human Rights Action Plan for Turkey. He also announced, in his words, “good news” that femicide will end. Now, women have forgotten the numbers of “good news” “Flash news” and speeches saying, “We end femicide”. But women never forget how many women are killed in Turkey every day. According to reports collected from news outlets, at least 10 women have been killed since Erdoğan made the announcement. Nothing has been done for these women.
Istanbul Convention hasn’t been implemented
All of the articles Erdoğan announced in the plan regarding women are about violence. This is not a coincidence. Surely, the measures to end violence against women would be discussed while violence against women increases day by day in the country. But how can women believe the announcement of the AKP while it tries to abolish Istanbul Convention?
Let’s remember together…
On March 2, 2021, a police officer named Y.Y. attempted to sexually abuse a child in the Derik district of Mardin province while Erdoğan was announcing Human Rights Action Plan for Turkey. Immediately, a confidentiality order was issued for the case. The police officer was transferred to another district to work instead of being dismissed.
In Antalya, two men named Murat K. and G.K. sexually abused a woman named Ç.Y. (29) but they have been released by the court pending the trial.
And Musa Orhan… being a specialized sergeant Musa Orhan was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman İpek Er. İpek Er committed suicide after being raped but Musa Orhan has been released by the court.

Two photographs actually summarize the AKP's "struggle" with violence. In the first picture, you can see a man named İbrahim Zarap, who knocked the stuffing out of his wife in front of her five-year-old daughter in Samsun province. As you can see, İbrahim Zarap walked with his head held high between two police officers.
The other picture was taken during the women’s demonstration. A woman is being taken into custody. She is handcuffed behind the back. She is being taken into custody for demanding her rights, for resisting, for speaking out against femicide… Here are two pictures show inequality in Turkey.
