Family Dispute Turns into Shooting That Claims a Young Woman's Life in As-Sweida
Raghad Al-Andari’s Killing in Sweida by her father sparks outrage,as he fled, prompting demands for investigation and accountability.
As-Sweida — Domestic violence and the resulting femicides constitute one of the most pressing issues in societies, as incidents that begin with minor household disputes escalate into fatal assaults, amid growing demands for enhanced protection and accountability.
Young woman Raghad Al-Andari, 21 years old, died yesterday evening, Monday, August 10, in the village of Al-Taybah in the eastern countryside of As-Sweida, after being shot in an incident that local sources say was committed by her father, Jandal Al-Andari, before he fled the scene.
Sources from the village reported that the father left after shooting his daughter, and his whereabouts remain unknown, while the young woman was buried without being transferred to a hospital, resulting in the absence of independent medical or forensic reports that could help document the details of the injury and death.
Local sources spoke of a dispute preceding the shooting between Raghad's father and her mother, after the father had expelled the mother from the home. Raghad refused to let her mother be thrown out, causing the confrontation between her and her father to escalate, ending with her being shot with a Russian-made rifle. According to the source, the young woman had been subjected to repeated violence inside the home, adding that she suffered from a disability in one of her legs, and described her as a peaceful, kind, and innocent young woman.
Local sources called on the relevant security and judicial authorities in As-Sweida to open an investigation into the case, uncover the circumstances surrounding Raghad Al-Andari's killing, determine responsibilities, pursue her father if his involvement is confirmed, and bring him to justice, emphasizing that femicides should not be treated as closed family disputes.
