Families of the Missing in Kobani Demand Intervention to Learn the Fate of Their Children

Kobani families urge the international community and Syrian government to reveal the fate of missing loved ones, release prisoners, and return martyrs' bodies.

Kobani — Despite the agreements and understandings signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the interim Syrian government, jihadists of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) continue to violate those agreements. This has led to the loss of a large number of SDF and Women's Protection Units (YPJ) fighters, amid a complete absence of any confirmed information regarding their fate, whether they are prisoners, missing, or martyrs.

In recent times, the regions of Rojava have witnessed a notable increase in reactions from residents regarding the issue of the missing and prisoners. In several cities, people have expressed their demands to uncover the fate of their loved ones. In the city of Kobani, the families of martyrs, the missing, and prisoners issued a statement on Saturday, March 7th, calling for the urgent disclosure of the fate of their children whose news has ceased, affirming that the lack of official information exacerbates the suffering of families and deepens the state of anxiety and uncertainty.

The text of the statement read: "The interim government, along with its armed factions, launched an attack on the areas of the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria, starting from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods and reaching areas in North and East Syria. This was done with direct military and security support from some regional powers, amid the silence and complicity of some international powers active in the Syrian file."

The statement affirmed that "the interim government in Damascus has flouted all the agreements and covenants concluded between it and the Autonomous Administration. The treacherous attack it launched has undermined security and stability in our regions and deepened the rift between the components of Syrian society through the violations committed against the people of the region, including killing, mutilation of martyrs' bodies, committing massacres, looting, and theft based on cultural, political, and religious identity."

The statement added that "the armed factions affiliated with the interim government continued to violate agreements and commit infractions even after the cessation of military operations between them and the Syrian Democratic Forces. This is done through continued arbitrary arrests, failure to disclose the fate of the missing and prisoners, and refusal to hand over the bodies of martyrs, in a clear violation of all international covenants, charters, and humanitarian and social norms."

In their statement, the families of martyrs, prisoners, and the missing demanded that "the interim government in Damascus disclose the fate of their children. We call on international and humanitarian organizations to intervene and pressure the interim government to release the prisoners, reveal the fate of the missing, and hand over the bodies of the martyrs."
