Fact sheet: Violence against women in Turkey

Violence against women in Turkey has been increasing each day. The courts have ruled against women.

News Center - Every day, we hear the incidents of violence against women. Women have been also ignored in judicial processes. Today, many women were subjected to violence in Turkey again. 65-year-old Rabia Bilgin was found dead in the Şabaniye neighborhood of Van’s Edremit district. Rabia Bilgin has been claimed to commit suicide. She was buried in Süphan Cemetery after autopsy procedures at Van Regional Training and Research Hospital were completed.

Man arrested for inflicting violence

Meral M. was subjected to violence by her husband named İhsan M. in the Silvan district of Diyarbakır. After being treated at a hospital, she was discharged from the hospital. İhsan M., who was taken into custody, has been sent to prison by a court.

İsmail Güneş faces 23 years prison sentence

In Istanbul’s Gaziosmanpaşa district, a man named İsmail Güneş systematically abused his ex-girlfriend. The perpetrator kidnapped the woman he saw on the street and took her to a cemetery in the Karlıktepe neighborhood. The man threatened to kill her, sexually abused the woman after he tortured her. After three days, the man released her. The man was taken into custody and sent to prison. He has faced 23 years prison sentence.

The defendant supposedly made ‘sincere’ statements!

Hasip Akbulut charged with killing his wife Muhterem Akbulut stood trial today. His lawyers claimed that their client made ‘sincere’ statements and demanded their client release.

The defendant attended the hearing from prison through the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS). The court ruled Hasip Akbulut to be jailed pending the trial and adjourned the trial.

He sentenced to 20 years in prison

Selim Şişman killed his wife Gökcen Şişman on June 30, 2019, in Çorum province. The final hearing of the trial was held today. The perpetrator, who stated that he felt "regret", claimed that he did not have an intention to kill his wife. He has been sentenced to 20 years and fice months in prison for “murder in the first degree”.
