Escalating Displacement Crisis in Blue Nile Amid Continued Military Escalation
Blue Nile displacement worsens amid military escalation; IOM reports 100,000 displaced, growing water and aid challenges, and children comprising nearly half of those affected.
News Center — As battles continue and security stability declines in Sudan, humanitarian conditions are likely to deteriorate further, especially if confrontations continue or the fighting spreads to new areas.
The International Organization for Migration announced today, Monday, September 14, that there are about 100,000 displaced people in Sudan's Blue Nile region since last January, noting that 41% of displaced families in Blue Nile suffer from a shortage of drinking water.
The organization confirmed that 38% of displaced families in Blue Nile reported obstacles to accessing humanitarian aid, adding that children make up about 47% of the total displaced population, reflecting the scale of the direct humanitarian impact of the fighting on families and civilians, especially the groups most vulnerable to the repercussions of the conflict.
Available data indicate that the displacement crisis in Blue Nile State has become one of the most prominent humanitarian repercussions of the ongoing military escalation, amid increasing pressures on basic services and the needs of the population in the affected areas.
The high proportion of children among the displaced exacerbates the scale of humanitarian needs, especially amid the continuation of the conflict and the difficulty of reaching some affected areas. Blue Nile is among the Sudanese states directly affected by the repercussions of the ongoing conflict in the country, with the effects of fighting spreading to new areas and the number of civilians forced to leave their homes increasing.
Displacement in Blue Nile comes within a broader displacement crisis that Sudan has been witnessing since the outbreak of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, and the successive waves of internal displacement and refuge to neighboring countries that resulted from it.
