Death toll in cholera outbreak in Nigeria rises to 35
Death toll in cholera outbreak in the Lagos State of Nigeria has risen to 35, the Lagos State Government said on Sunday.
News Center- The cholera outbreak continues to spread in Lagos State, the second most populous state in Nigeria. Death toll in the cholera outbreak in the state has kept rising due to the lack of clean water and healthcare services.
Prof Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, said Sunday on his Instagram account that 14 people died of cholera in the state in two days and the number of people died of cholera has risen to 35. “The number of confirmed cases in the nation’s commercial capital is 417.”
More than 100 people died of cholera in 2023
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera. It can quickly become fatal if left untreated. In 2023, more than 3,000 cholera cases were recorded in Nigeria, killing more than 100 people.
