A.A. was sentenced to 28 years in prison for sexually abusing his five-year-old grandchild. But the court has released the abusive grandfather due to his age and illness. “There is no legal explanation for releasing a man who has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. We will file an appeal,” said lawyer Ayça Kara Sığırcı.

News Center - A.A. sexually abused his five-year-old grandchild in Adana province. 69-year-old A.A. has been sentenced to 28 years in prison by the court. But the same court has released him.

A.A. appeared before the judge for hearting held by the 8th High Criminal Court in Adana. During the hearing, A.A. said, “They slander me” to defend himself. The Child Monitoring Center officers read the statement of the victim child A.K.A., “I play games with my friends but not with my grandfather. Because he is a trickster. Whenever I go there, he calls me to “play games” but he does the same thing.”

The court has sentenced A.A. to 28 years in prison but decided to release him due to his age and illness. 

They will make an objection against the court decision

Ayça Kara Sığırcı, Legal Coordinator Lawyer of the SaadetÖğretmen Association for Struggle with Child Abuse (UCİM) in Adana, said that people who commit such crimes should not walk free outside. “There is no legal explanation for releasing a man who has been sentenced to 28 years in prison. We will file an appeal. The prosecution may also appeal to the court decision,” said Ayça Kara Sığırcı.

What had happened?

Sexual abuse emerged in July 2019 when the victim A.K.A. told his family that he did not want to see his grandfather. A.A. worked as an architect in Osmaniye for years. He sometimes visited his son O.A. and daughter in law in Adana. And he spent time with his grandchild A.K.A. during his visits. The parents later realized the change in their child's behavior after a while, the parents suspected the situation when their son said he didn’t want to spend time with his grandfather. The parents asked their son why he didn’t want to spend time with his grandfather. The answer of the boy showed he had been sexually abused by his grandfather. The parents filed a criminal complaint against A.A. A.A. was detained last year and he was released by the court pending a trial.
