Amed – Free Women’s Movement (Tevgera Jinên Azad –TJA) and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) will hold a rally on October 16 at the Istasyon Square of Diyarbakır province with the motto, “Now is the time for women’s freedom, enough to racism and sexism.” TJA activists have visited many cities, districts, and villages to raise the awareness of the public against prostitution, drugs, and violence against women in the region. We spoke to TJA activists about the rally.

“We aim to reach women and young people”

TJA activist Jale Okan told us they decided to hold this rally due to the increase of femicide and violence against women. “We already started working for the rally.  We visit all houses and streets to include women in our works. As women, we work very hard to raise awareness and realize our self-defense. We aim to reach all women and young people by visiting all houses. We do our best to include them in this struggle.”

“We will visit all villages and cities”

The TJA has organized meetings and workshops for women in every city of the Kurdish region. Jale Okan calls on all women to participate in the rally. “We will do our best to raise the awareness of the public. We have already visited many villages and we will visit all villages and cities. Women have organized meetings and workshops in each city. We have met many women, who struggle against patriarchy. We will reach all women.”

“We will continue to work after the rally”

Another TJA activist Yüksel Çelik also talked about their works and the rally. “As women and young people, we will flock to the streets on October 16. We are well aware that women are subjected to violence and harassment; we have carried out works to protect women and encourage them to use their self-defense. We have met many women until now, we spend time with women. We will continue to work after the rally.”
