Shengal – Dengbej (Kurdish storyteller) Aware Xan visited Shengal to support the “We are all Asayish” vigil held in front of the Êzidxan Asayish Building for 127 days by Êzidîs to protest the agreement signed between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Stating that great importance should be attached to Shengal and its management system, Aware Xan said, “You can feel the pain and experiences of the people of Shengal only when you touch them. Shengal is an important part of all of us and we shouldn’t allow this important part to be disappeared. Surely, we have also faced pains but we should understand the pains of Shengal and women of Shengal in our hearts.”

“Return to your land”

Aware Xan underlined that Shengal is a holy place not just for Êzidîs but also for all women and she called on all Êzidîs, who cannot return to their homeland due to their fear and concerns, “They tried to take Shengal from the people of Shengal. They wanted to leave Shengal without Êzidîs. Return to your homeland to show them that you will not allow these policies. Return to Shengal and celebrate Çarşema Sor (Black Wednesday) in Shengal."

Preparations for the Çarşema Sor celebrations

The Free Êzidî Women's Movement (TAJÊ) member Nisan Şengali thanked Aware Xan for her visit. “As we said during the edict, we say that we will not leave our lands, mountains, holy Shengal and we will defend them,” Nisan Şengali said that all people around the world should hear the voice of women of Shengal.

Nisan Şengali told us that they have already started the preparations for the Çarşema Sor celebrations.
