Association of Women of Eastern Kurdistan: What Is Happening in Iran and Rojava Is a Crime Against Humanity

The Association of Women of Eastern Kurdistan condemned escalating attacks on protests in Iran and Rojava, calling them crimes against humanity and demanding accountability globally.

News Center — Iran is witnessing widespread human rights violations, including repression, arbitrary arrests, and torture, which are classified as crimes against humanity aimed at silencing voices demanding freedom. In contrast, Rojava has emerged as a model of resistance, demonstrating its ability to endure despite ongoing threats.

The Association of Women of Eastern Kurdistan issued a statement regarding the escalating attacks on protests in Iran and Rojava, affirming that what is taking place in Iran and Eastern Kurdistan constitutes a “crime against humanity.” The statement called on international organizations, human rights bodies, and democratic authorities to end their silence, recognize the crimes of the Islamic Republic as crimes against humanity, and work to hold those responsible for killing, torture, and repression accountable before international justice.

The statement noted that Rojava has become a fundamental force in social defense and organization:

“Through their struggle in Rojava, women have proven that the liberation of women can be the foundation of a new social system. However, the experience of Rojava and its achievements are constantly facing political, military, and international threats. Military attacks, attempts at geopolitical change, lack of support and hesitation by international authorities, and efforts to undermine the democratic self-administration all endanger the lives of women, their security, and their achievements in the region.”

The association emphasized its continued struggle for freedom, equality, and justice until the day when no woman is accused because of her ethnicity, beliefs, or way of life, and when no force can silence women’s voices through fear and violence.

“The Struggle Must Not Stop”

The statement drew attention to the fact that the silence of the international community enables the continuation of crimes:

“We reaffirm the need for a clear, strong, and effective response that goes beyond words to include action, accountability, and punishment. The struggle for freedom and justice must not stop. Women will never abandon their demands for a free, equal, and humane life. We affirm that the struggle of women in Iran, Kurdistan, Rojava, and elsewhere is a struggle for a life free from oppression, for human dignity, and for a future in which women are not subjected to persecution.”
