ROJBÎN DENİZ
On Saturday, the Kurdish people in Rojava took another revolutionary step; they held a conference on Kurdish national unity in the city of Qamishlo (Qamishli) with the participation of more than 400 delegates from four parts of Kurdistan and various cities of Syria.
The Kurdish women, who led the revolution in Rojava (northeastern Syria) also took part in the conference by wearing their traditional dresses in order to ensure Kurdish national unity.
The ‘Call for Peace and Democratic Society’ brings Kurds together
The “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” made by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, 2025 left its mark on the conference, bringing Kurds together to build a democratic Syria and discuss the Kurdish position in Syria.
Journalists showed great interest
Over 400 delegates and the leaders of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria took part in the conference. Journalists also showed a great interest in the conference. The opening speeches and messages clearly revealed the main purpose of the conference: The unity of the Kurdish people will not destroy the paradigm of democracy, ecology and women's freedom; on the contrary, it will strengthen it.
The message given at the conference was “It is time for the Kurdish people, for freedom of the Kurdish people”. The conference emphasized the Kurdish struggle for freedom and victory.
On Saturday, the Kurds, who have liberated their region by paying a heavy price, discussed the existence and national identity of the Kurds in the rebuilding of Syria. The price paid in the region was also remembered at the conference, which witnessed emotional moments; some burst into tears and some hugged each other with happiness. Women were also happy for bringing the four parts of Kurdistan together and they expressed their happiness by chanting the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (English: Women, Life, Freedom)” slogan.
After the opening speeches and messages, the conference continued as a closed-door conference. At the closed-door conference, many issues such as the position of the Kurdish people, the constitution and defense of the system in the new Syria, the return of displaced people, the name and flag of the new Syria. The protection of Syria’s different religious and ethnic groups came to the forefront at the conference.
At the conference, the representatives of the Kurdish people in Rojava called for a “decentralized democratic” state in Syria, where Kurdish rights are guaranteed.
Women's issue is a red line
The women’s rights and women’s participation in politics, decision-making positions and social life in Syria was particularly emphasized. In other words, the issue of women was determined as a red line for Syria and the Kurds. The Kurds also demanded the International Women’s Day, March 8, and Newroz be a national holiday in Syria.
The conference ended with a final declaration. We hope that this conference will pave the way for the holding of the Kurdistan National Conference.
