Amnestz International Demands an Immediate Halt to the Execution of Female Political Prisoners in Iran
Amnesty International voiced concern over death sentences against at least five Iranian women after unfair, politically motivated trials, amid escalating government repression campaigns targeting activists and protesters.
NEWS CENTER_Iranian authorities continue to expand the scope of implementing death sentences against women, and these penalties are being carried out amid international accusations that Tahran is using execution as a tool to intimidate society and suppress women’s movements and voices opposed to the regime.
Amnesty International demanded an immediate halt to all death sentences issued against female political prisoners in Iran, condemning the ruling issued against the young woman Taraneh Rahimi, 21 years old, following an unfair trial in Isfahan based on forced confessions extracted under torture.
The organization reported that Taraneh Rahimi was subjected to enforced disappearance for more than two months after her arrest on 24 January, where she faced physical injuries and threats of sexual assault against her detained sister Romina to force her to confess.
In the context of the escalation of government repression, it drew attention to the upholding of another death sentence against activist Varisha Moradi, raising the number of women who have faced similar rulings within less than two months to at least five women: (Mahboubeh Shaabani, Marzieh Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, Mazhdeh Hashemi Bazargani, Najmeh Amini, and Varisha Moradi).
The organization confirmed that dozens of people in Iran currently face the risk of political execution, calling on the international community and governments to exercise urgent diplomatic pressure on the Iranian authorities to impose an official ban on the implementation of these rulings.
