Manbij- Hevrin Khalaf, a Kurdish politician and the Secretary General of the Future Syria Party, was killed by Turkish-backed Ahrar al-Sharqiya fighters near the M4 Motorway south of Tell Abyad on October 12, 2019. An all-women health center called, “The Laboratory of Hevrin Khalaf” was opened on the anniversary of Hevrin Khalaf's murder.

Only women work at the health center

“This laboratory is different from other health centers because of its modern equipment and because it is run by women and provides health services at very low cost,” said Efaf El-Şex, one of the founders of the Laboratory of Hevrin Khalaf and a nurse at the center. Stating that patients feel more comfortable at the center, Efaf El-Şex said, “The purpose of this laboratory is to show how women can run a facility, a health center, with their ability without the help of men.”

“Such projects should be also conducted in other areas”

Haci Ferec works at the center as a nurse. “With the spread of the coronavirus, we care about daily sterilization in the laboratory because we are responsible for the lives of patients. Female patients feel more comfortable because all employees of the center are women. Most female patients prefer to come to the laboratory. The number of patients coming to the laboratory is increasing day by day. We already prove that women can run the laboratory without any help.  In order to build a society where women are not marginalized, such projects should be also conducted in other areas.”

“Such projects should be supported”

“We work with full unity. We all work and help each other. The Health Committee should support such projects,” said Ala El-Xelef, one of the nurses working at the center.
