All-women district market sellers win, men to not work at their market

Diyarbakır’s Bağlar Municipality unelected mayor decided to place 400 men in Turkey’s first all-women district market called, “Jiyan District Market”, but women working at the market protested the decision. The decision has been revoked.

Amed – “Jiyan District Market” is Turkey’s first all-women district market located in the Bağcılar Neighborhood of Diyarbakır’s Bağlar district. The market was built by Bağlar Municipality governed by Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) for women in 2013. Diyarbakır’s Bağlar Municipality was won by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in the last local election held in 2019 but the elected co-mayors were replaced by the government-appointed trustee. The unelected mayor Hüseyin Beyoğlu decided to place 400 men in Turkey’s first all-women district market called, “Jiyan District Market”, where 258 female sellers have worked.  The women protested and criticized the decision and they stated that they didn’t want any men to work at their market.

After the protests of women, the Bağlar Municipality has revoked its decision.
